  15. Prize in 1956 for his part in inventing the transistor, the
  16. device that made modern electronics possible; in Palo Alto,
  17. Calif. In the mid-1960s he ventured controversially into racist
  18. genetic theory, arguing that whites in general are superior in
  19. intelligence to blacks and proposing that people with low IQs
  20. or genetically transmitted diseases be paid to be sterilized.
